Pilots Women's Soccer Claims Regional Banner, Shines at Nationals

NCCAA Regionals

The Providence Pilots Women's Soccer team wrapped up an extraordinary season, finishing with a 12-2-0 record and capturing the program's sixth NCCAA North Region Banner. The team's road to the banner was nothing short of dramatic, clinching the title in a thrilling penalty shootout against host school Crown College

A deja vu moment from 2022, the Pilots and the Polars were once again tied after 110 minuets of play. The Pilots out shot the Polars 7-3 in the first half. Crown scored the first goal of the match off an penalty kick in the 54th minute of competition. Crown was able to hang on to the one-point lead until the 83rd minute of the match when the Pilots sent one in off a corner kick, buried by second year striker Serena Negrich. The score remained 1-1 until the end of regulation, sending the game into overtime. After two scoreless ten-minute overtime periods, the game was sent to penalty kicks. Both the Polars and the Pilots scored on their first kick attempts. In the second set of kicks Crown missed while the Pilots scored giving Providence the 2-1 advantage. The Polars connected on their next kick and a miss from the Pilots evened the score back at 2-2. Crown and Providence both sunk their fourth kicks, so it all came down to the fifth kick of the shootout. After a Crown miss, Providence second year Catalina Hickey stepped up to take the fifth and final shot; hitting the back of the net, the Pilots were on their way back to Nationals, to chase another championship.

Earning a well-deserved spot at the NCCAA National Tournament—the Pilots defense proved impenetrable. In an impressive display of grit and tactical discipline, Providence did not allow a single goal throughout the entire tournament. Despite their stellar performance, the Pilots narrowly missed out on the National final by point differentials. However, the team proudly represented Providence at the highest level, displaying heart, sportsmanship, and championship-caliber play on and off the field. Fourth year defender Ava Temple was named to the All-Tournament team. Temple played an integral role in the Pilots shutout performance.

The Pilots were also recognized for their academic excellence, earning the prestigious NCCAA National Scholar Team Award. A remarkable 22 players on the roster maintained a GPA above 3.0, highlighting the team's commitment to success in the classroom as well as on the pitch.
With both athletic and academic accolades in hand, the 2024 season will be remembered as one of the most successful in program history.
