Pilots Men's Volleyball Return Home Friday, Eyeing Fifth Straight MCAC Championship

OTTERBURNE, MB – The Providence Pilots Men's Volleyball team is off to a strong start this season, having already secured victories over the Université de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges and Red River Rebels. Now, the four-time defending MCAC Champions are preparing for a special home opener this Friday night at 6:00 PM against the Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) Blazers.

The matchup marks an exciting milestone for the program, as the Pilots return to their home gym following extensive renovations. After spending the past few seasons playing home matches at the Niverville Recreation Centre, Providence will host volleyball on campus for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chasing a Fifth Straight Championship

Coming off four consecutive MCAC titles, the Pilots enter the season determined to continue their championship tradition. However, with a growing and increasingly competitive conference, the road to a fifth straight title promises to be challenging.

Providence will rely on a talented mix of returning veterans and exciting newcomers. Captains Liam Buhler, Jesse VandenBerg, and Caleb Reimer have set the tone throughout the preseason, establishing a culture built on hard work, positive attitudes, growth, and unity.

The Pilots graduated several key contributors from last year's championship squad, including Marcus Zeilstra, Kade Lepp, Dominick Penner, Cole Doell, Cayden Williams, and Thomas Pain. Despite those departures, this year's roster brings exceptional size, athleticism, and depth.

With five players standing 6'5" or taller and an impressive 12 athletes reaching an 11-foot spike touch, the Pilots have one of their most physically gifted groups in recent years.

A Talented Group With Plenty of Potential

Returning starters Jesse VandenBerg, Liam Buhler, and Lukas Klassen will be counted on to lead the way on the court, while players such as Riley Schellenberg, Jackson Friesen, Will Soper, and Rylan Landstad bring exciting potential.

With eight first-year players and several athletes adjusting to new positions, the Pilots recognize that developing chemistry and consistency will take time. However, their two early-season victories provide a promising foundation as they continue to grow together.

The addition of Red River to the MCAC also brings another challenge to an increasingly competitive conference.

Despite the learning curve ahead, Head Coach Paul Ambruster is enthusiastic about what this group can accomplish.

"I feel super blessed to coach this group. We have a ton of high-character guys, and so far I've been really happy with our work in the weight room from this past summer until now, and how much more physical we are as a team. We are again seeing great brotherhood, friendships, and culture develop, which is rewarding, and we have lots of guys hungry to get to another level in their game. It's looking like another special year, and it's been a joy to coach this group so far."

A Special Homecoming

Beyond the pursuit of another championship, Friday night's home opener represents an exciting new chapter for Providence Volleyball. With a renovated gym, a 2-0 start to the season, and the opportunity to compete once again in front of their home crowd on campus, the Pilots have plenty to look forward to.
