Providence University College Athletics has announced the decision to discontinue the Junior Pilots Club program, effective immediately.
The decision comes as Providence continues to navigate significant financial challenges and evaluate its athletic and institutional priorities. While the decision to close the Junior Pilots Club was difficult, Providence Athletics believes that communicating the decision now is in the best interest of the athletes and families involved.
"While this is a difficult decision, we believe it is important to give our athletes and families clarity as early as possible," said Joel Coursey, Director of Athletics. "Rather than asking families to wait through an increasingly uncertain situation, we want to give them the opportunity to explore other local club programs and make decisions that are best for their athletes."
The Junior Pilots Club has provided young athletes in the region with opportunities to develop their skills, compete, and build relationships through sport. Providence Athletics is grateful to the coaches, athletes, parents, and volunteers who have invested in the program and helped make it a meaningful part of the Providence community.
The closure of the Junior Pilots Club is a result of the broader financial circumstances facing Providence and should not be viewed as a reflection of the quality of the program, its coaches, or the athletes who participated.
Providence Athletics is encouraging Junior Pilots athletes and families to explore other local club opportunities so that athletes can continue their development and participation in the sport. Providence is also working to communicate with local club organizations to help provide pathways for athletes who are seeking new teams.
"We are incredibly thankful for every coach and family who has been part of the Junior Pilots Club," Coursey said. "Our coaches have poured countless hours into these athletes, and we are grateful for the way they have invested in the next generation. We want to do everything we can to help our athletes find a positive path forward."
Providence Athletics remains committed to its varsity athletics programs and to creating opportunities for student-athletes to grow through sport, academics, and community.
The Junior Pilots Club closure represents a difficult transition for the Providence Athletics community, but the department is committed to supporting its athletes and families throughout the process.
