Last summer, Shannon Bodnarus and Jesse Vanden Berg weren't just preparing for their first year of collegiate volleyball—they were investing in the next generation of athletes.
Now, after completing their freshman seasons with the Providence Pilots, both athletes are looking back on their experience as coaches at Providence Sports Camps as a defining part of their year—one that shaped them as players, leaders, and teammates.
A Summer That Set the Tone
For Shannon, stepping into a coaching role was a full-circle moment.
"I participated in the volleyball sports camps as an athlete and heard that I could return as a coach," she said. "The environment is great, and it's really cool to interact with others who are passionate about growing in the game and in their faith."
Jesse came in with a different perspective—but found the experience just as impactful.
"I never had the chance to go to camp as a kid, so I wanted to see what it was all about," he said. "It ended up being a really fun and meaningful experience."
More Than Just Drills and Skills
While the days were filled with volleyball, it was the moments outside the gym that left a lasting impression.
Shannon points to one of her favourite camp traditions.
"The talent show dance battle each team choreographed was such a highlight," she said. "It turned into a spontaneous worship night and dance party—it was so fun to be part of."
Jesse remembers a moment that perfectly captured the energy of camp life.
"One of my campers 'slipped' in the cafeteria and sent their tray flying everywhere," he said. "It was chaos—but hilarious."
Learning to Lead
That summer experience carried directly into their freshman seasons, helping both athletes grow in how they approach leadership and teamwork.
Shannon learned the importance of intentional coaching.
"It's important to give individual feedback that meets athletes at their skill level," she said. "I always try to keep things positive."
For Jesse, the biggest takeaway was about people, not just performance.
"Coaching takes a lot of patience and encouragement," he said. "You have to coach the person first and the athlete second."
Building Connections Before Day One
One of the biggest advantages of coaching at camp came before their collegiate careers even began—stronger relationships.
Shannon spent three weeks coaching alongside team captain Tyra Peters, building a connection that carried into the season.
"It was really cool going into my freshman year already having that friendship," she said. "I also got to know staff connected to the program, which helped a lot."
Jesse found the same benefit.
"Camp helped me get to know more about my teammates and meet people from other teams too," he said.
Carrying It Into Their Freshman Seasons
Now, after completing their first year with the Pilots, both athletes credit that summer experience with helping shape their mindset on and off the court.
Shannon focused on consistency and effort.
"My goal all year was to work hard every practice—those reps make the biggest difference."
Jesse set clear goals for his development.
"I wanted to improve my game and stay positive, not letting my emotions get out of control," he said. "That mindset made a difference throughout the season."
Both athletes also became known for what they brought beyond their play.
"I try to bring energy and positivity," Shannon said. "I love motivating my teammates and helping us stay dialed in."
"I want to be someone people can rely on for positivity and motivation," Jesse added.
Advice for the Next Generation
Looking back, both athletes encourage young players to take chances—whether that's trying out for a team or stepping into something new like coaching.
"Keep trying. Show up, do your best, and have fun," Shannon said.
Jesse's journey is proof of that mindset.
"I didn't think I had a chance when I tried out," he said. "Now I'm playing at the college level. The friendships and memories you make are worth it."
