Providence Athletics is proud to announce the official rebrand of the Providence Pilots, introducing a new logo and refreshed visual identity that reflects the future of Pilots athletics while staying rooted in the history and community of Providence University College.
The new Providence Pilots brand represents more than a logo change. It is a thoughtful step forward in creating a stronger, more unified athletics identity—one that is inclusive, flexible, and built to serve Providence teams, athletes, and supporters for years to come.
The choice of an otter as the central character was intentional. Strong, agile, determined, and free, the otter provides a symbol in which all Providence athletes can see themselves represented. It also creates a meaningful connection to the Town of Otterburne, grounding the Pilots brand in their local identity.
The new logo also creates a stronger connection to Otto the Otter Pilot, Providence's mascot and one of the most visible symbols of school spirit within the athletics community. By aligning the visual identity more closely with Otto, the rebrand strengthens the relationship between the Pilots brand, the game-day experience, and fan engagement. Otto has already become a recognizable and energizing presence at Providence events, and the new logo helps unify that mascot identity with the broader athletics brand in a more intentional and consistent way.
A major feature of the rebrand is the introduction of ice blue as an official accent colour within the Providence Pilots visual identity. While navy and white remain the foundation of the brand, the addition of ice blue creates a dynamic new layer that enhances flexibility and creative expression across the entire athletics system. Ice blue also carries symbolic meaning within the Pilots identity, representing the sky where our Pilots fly and reinforcing the aviation-inspired character that has long been central to Providence Athletics. The accent colour improves contrast and visibility across different jersey colourways, merchandise options, and promotional materials. In particular, the ice blue outline allows a single logo design to work effectively across light, dark, and coloured backgrounds, reducing the need for multiple alternate logo versions. The result is a cleaner, more efficient brand system that streamlines production while opening new possibilities for uniforms, fan gear, and marketing applications. Ice blue adds a crisp pop of energy and excitement without overpowering the core palette, helping navy and white stand out even more boldly.
The design of the new logo was created to communicate a stronger competitive identity for Providence Athletics. Unlike the previous side-facing human pilot mark, the new forward-facing otter presents the Pilots brand head-on. This shift symbolizes confidence, courage, and a readiness to meet every challenge directly. It reflects a program that is not looking backward or to the side, but moving forward with purpose, unity, and ambition. The front-facing posture also creates a stronger sense of connection and presence, giving the logo a more direct and powerful relationship with athletes, fans, and opponents alike.
The intensity in the eyes was intentionally designed to capture the competitive spirit of Providence sport. They communicate focus, determination, and edge—qualities that define athletes who compete with discipline and passion. The expression gives the mark energy and attitude, reinforcing that the Pilots are fierce, resilient, and prepared to battle in every contest.
The new typography further strengthens that identity. The custom athletic font was chosen to evoke speed, movement, and agility, with sharp angles and a forward-driving character that complements the logo symbol. Together, the type and icon create a visual system that feels fast, bold, and game-ready.
"This rebrand is about more than a new look," said Joel Coursey, Director of Athletics. "It is about building a visual identity that better represents our entire Providence community. We wanted something that was bold, distinctive, inclusive, and rooted in who we are. This new Pilots identity gives us a brand system that is versatile, professional, and built for the future."
The rebrand will be implemented in phases across athletics branding, uniforms, merchandise, facilities, and communications materials. As the new identity is introduced, Providence Athletics looks forward to building greater consistency, stronger recognition, and renewed excitement around the Pilots brand.
"A shout-out to longtime creative partner Chris and his team at Chez Koop, who have shaped the Pilots' brand for the past decade and approached this rebrand with skill, precision, and artistry." Joel Coursey
This new era of Providence Pilots Athletics is one that honours the past while embracing the future—equipping the department with a visual identity that reflects excellence, community, and school pride.
