Flight Report: Tough weekend matchups all round for the Pilots

Pilots Basketball Battles Through Weekend Matchups vs. CMU

The Providence Pilots men's and women's basketball programs hit the court for a competitive back-to-back weekend against the CMU Blazers on November 14–15, highlighted by standout individual performances and a key victory for the women on Saturday.


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

November 14 — Providence 71, CMU 61

The Pilots saw several strong efforts across the lineup in their season opening match up against the Blazers. Providence shot an impressive 45.9% from the field and dominated the bench scoring with 43 points off the bench 

Faith LaRocque brought energy on both ends, grabbing offensive rebounds and finishing plays inside 

Mikeala Ramsay added a key third-quarter three-pointer that helped keep the Pilots within reach late in the game 

Colby Darragh contributed meaningful minutes off the bench, adding 4 points and a defensive rebound to spark the rotation early in the game 

Providence dominated the paint with 42 points inside and held a +9 rebounding advantage (32–23) over CMU in the matchup

November 15 — Providence 55, CMU 54

The Pilots played a gritty, defensive battle to earn their first home win of the regular season.

A standout performance came from Faith LaRocque, who delivered a massive 12-point, 10-rebound double-double, including key second-half rebounds that stabilized the Pilots late in the game 

Additional strong showings included:

Adrian Alley, who filled the stat sheet with rebounds, defensive pressure, and timely free throws in the fourth quarter 

Colby Darragh, supplying bench scoring and hustle plays that pushed the Pilots ahead in the first half 

Providence won the rebounding battle 55–49 and relied on defensive stops in the final minutes to secure the one-point victory

MEN'S BASKETBALL

November 14 — CMU 84, Providence 66

The Pilots showed fight in their Friday matchup behind the play of multiple contributors.

Top Pilot performances included:

Rowan Gilbert, who was efficient in limited minutes, adding 7 points on 3-for-5 shooting in the first quarter and finishing strong in the fourth with a late layup to close out his night 
Judah Graham, who worked aggressively on offense, attacking downhill and contributing scoring from the guard spot throughout the game 
Garrett Smith, who provided interior defense and rebounding stability inside the paint 

Providence shot 45.3% from the field and recorded 40 points in the paint—a bright spot as the Pilots maintained strong interior presence against the Blazers

November 15 — CMU 71, Providence 69

A dramatic finish highlighted Saturday's rematch, where the Pilots pushed CMU to the final possession.

Judah Graham delivered a standout performance with 23 points, attacking the rim and hitting free throws to keep Providence within striking distance late in the fourth quarter 

Rowan Gilbert added 19 points, showcasing efficiency from the field and strong rebounding in crucial moments to give the Pilots repeated scoring opportunities 

Hayden Wiebe and Danny Beauchamp combined for multiple assists and key defensive rebounds that kept the game tight down the stretch 

Providence shot 40.6%, knocked down seven three-pointers, and rallied in the third quarter with a 29-point surge before CMU edged ahead.

Both Pilots squads continue to show growth early in the season, with strong individual efforts and competitive team performances across the weekend. Providence returns to action next week as they prepare to travel down south for the 2025 Faith Baptist Basketball Classic!! 

 

PILOTS VOLLEYBALL PUSHES HARD IN MCAC WEEKEND TESTS — NOVEMBER 15–16

The Providence Pilots volleyball programs wrapped up a busy two-match weekend with strong individual performances, a five-set road victory for the men, and competitive sets across both programs as conference play approaches its midpoint.


WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

November 15 — CMU 3, Providence 1

(25–27, 19–25, 25–22, 18–25)

The Pilots battled through four tight sets on the road at CMU, delivering one of their strongest offensive outputs of the season despite falling 3–1.

Providence finished with 41 kills, led by:

  • Tyra Peters — 10 kills, .320 hitting, 9 digs, 2 aces

  • Zoe MacLellan — 10 kills, .444 hitting, 3 blocks (1 solo) 

  • Sydney Turenne — 9 kills, 3 aces, 12 total points 

  • Kara Bartel — 7 kills, 13 points, 5 blocks (3 solo) 

Setter Amanda Bergen steered the offense with 28 assists, while libero Maddie Oselies contributed 7 digs in a strong defensive effort.

Providence also served aggressively, finishing with 15 aces, with three players—Georgia Friesen, Sydney Turenne, and Angelle Turenne—each recording 3 aces in the match 


November 16 — USB 3, Providence 0

(18–25, 22–25, 23–25)

The Pilots put together another hard-fought match on Sunday, highlighted by improved blocking and balanced contributions across the lineup.

Top performers included:

  • Avery Pauls — 4 kills, 4 digs, 2 aces, 2 blocks 

  • Tyra Peters — 6 kills, 10 digs, 2 blocks 

  • Zoe MacLellan — 5 kills, .714 hitting, 2 blocks 

  • Taylor Campbell — 3 kills, 3 digs, ace 

Setter Amanda Bergen added 16 assists, and Sophia Johnston recorded 9 digs to lead the backcourt.

Providence tallied 6 total blocks and 7 service aces, keeping pressure on USB throughout all three sets.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL

November 15 — Providence 3, CMU 2

(25–20, 17–25, 25–20, 22–25, 15–10)

In one of their most complete matches of the season, the Pilots earned a huge five-set win on the road at CMU, powered by a balanced attack and clutch serving.

Providence recorded 42 kills with exceptional efficiency, highlighted by:

  • Cole Doell — 14 kills, .357 hitting, 2 blocks, 19 total points 

  • Liam Buhler — 11 kills, .733 hitting, 1 block (zero attack errors) 

  • Cayden Williams — 9 kills, 7 aces (!!), 3 digs 

  • Jesse Vanden Berg — 5 kills, 5 aces 

Setter Marcus Zeilstra delivered one of his best matches of the season with 38 assists, 5 aces, 2 digs, and a solo block to finish with 7 total points.

Defensively, Providence posted 6 blocks and held CMU to .289 hitting, including a pivotal fifth set where the Pilots allowed just 10 points.


November 16 — Providence 3, USB 1

(12–25, 25–23, 25–14, 25–18)

A slow first set turned into a dominating response as the Pilots stormed back to win three straight for a 3–1 victory over USB.

Providence's offense exploded from the second set onward, led by:

  • Cole Doell — 15 kills, 3 aces, 3 blocks, 20.5 total points (team-high) 

  • Cayden Williams — 5 kills, 4 aces, 2 blocks 

  • Will Soper — 5 kills, 2 aces 

  • Liam Buhler — 3 kills, 3 aces 

  • Lukas Klassen — 4 kills, block, 3 aces 

Setter Marcus Zeilstra once again ran the offense with 21 assists, while Providence controlled the net with 6 team blocks and 17 service aces, overwhelming USB in the final three sets.

Both Pilots volleyball programs return to action next weekend as they continue MCAC play and look to build on strong individual performances and the men's two-match win streak. They will host the AC Cougars at home on Nov 21 and 22nd!!
