Providence University College Athletics is thrilled to announce the launch of Men's and Women's Curling as Providence Pilots varsity programs, with competition set to begin in Fall 2026.
Curling's addition marks a major step forward for Providence Athletics as the department continues to expand opportunities for student-athletes to compete, grow, and represent the Pilots at the highest collegiate level. The addition of curling follows closely behind the launch of cross country teams also set to begin competition in Fall 2026.
"Curling is a sport built on community, tradition, and excellence—and that fits perfectly with who we are," said Joel Coursey, Director of Athletics. "The excitement around curling in Southeast Manitoba is undeniable. After seeing Steinbach host the Grand Slam of Curling just last week, it's clear this region is passionate about the sport. We're proud to bring collegiate curling to Providence and to Otterburne."
"The addition of curling to the athletic program here at Providence is so smart. Curling is an incredibly popular sport here in the prairies, and thus there is a wealth of top talent to recruit. As a curler myself, I am very excited to welcome and cheer on the new Providence curling teams!" - Rebecca Dielschneider (Associate Professor of Health Sciences)
Providence will compete in the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) as a tournament sport. The Pilots will develop through local men's and women's league play and bonspiels and then compete in an MCAC championship to determine the MCAC champion—advancing toward the opportunity to compete at the CCAA/Curling Canada College Curling Championships.
"For our student-athletes, this is the ultimate motivator," added Coursey. "We're launching with a real championship pathway—conference competition that leads to a chance to compete for a national title. That's a big statement for a new program, and it's a huge opportunity for the young curlers we'll bring to Providence."
Through 2016-2021 local curling star Jordan Peters attended Providence, studying Business Administration. During his time at Providence, Jordan took a brief break from his studies to lead Canada to gold at the 2020 World Juniors in Russia. "Curling has been a big part of my life from childhood through college and into adulthood. As an alumnus, seeing Providence get involved in the sport means a lot to me. Curling is a game that teaches patience, discipline, and teamwork while building respect and strong character, values that fit naturally within Providence's mission to develop Christ-centered leaders." - Jordan Peters
Providence will be opening a coaching search in the days to come, with a goal of having leadership in place as early as possible to guide athlete recruitment and program development ahead of the Fall 2026 launch.
